Legs or No Legs?

I've decided to bring my latest CL find in to house the television.  It's not often that you find an old cupboard that will fit a large tv.

The current tv cupboard is great (I got it from Shelley, Sweet Pea Home), but an enclosed cupboard will be the best thing.  And, I already have a new place in mind for the current one..

So here's my question.....The 'legs' on the cupboard are in pretty bad shape and completely uneven.  So should I just try to 'even' out the legs or just cut them off completely?  Is there any advantage to having legs if height is not an issue?  It would be one less place for those dreaded 'dust balls' to hide without legs!

For example, this cupboard has about 2" legs......

See the dust?

These are both Southern pieces, and my guess would be that they had legs to protect the cupboard from water damage.  Back in the day, women would just toss a bucket of water on the floor and mop it up.  You'll see water marks on a lot of old farm tables!

So now, if I bring in this cupboard.......

I'll have to move this hanging cupboard (also from Shelley)......

which I just redecorated last night........

Because.......
I had to display my new letters, found in an Etsy shop here

Now what to do with the stuff I took out?
Keep it?  Sell?

Some of it did go here:

(some of this stuff isn't in the above pic...I change it around often)

I'm already exhausted just thinking about it all!
I'll definitely have to 'make nice' to my husband this weekend!

Did I happen to mention that the cupboard was $50.00?

I'm linking up with Faded Charm  for White Wednesday.

  1. My idea is to cut off the legs, but put sliders under the cabinet so you can easily move it around later(if you need/want to). The sliders can be pushed back far enough where people would not be able to see them. We have done this with a couple of heavy pieces of furniture and it's worked out great.

  2. I vote for no legs, they seem out of proportion for the size of the cupboard anyway. I think it is really hard to cut down legs on a table, an exercise in frustration. I think it would look fine with no legs and I agree with the first poster, add some pads or sliders to make it easy to move..

  3. No legs...dust bunnies are no fun.
Keep, Keep, Keep so you can rearrange again later!
    Love it all!

  6. I like the legs but the slider idea seems a lot more practical and better in the long run.

  7. Such a chore rearranging our treasures all the time, isn't it...LOL. I think it would be best to lose the legs and use sliders.

We will get to see the end result, won't we?

  8. No legs-what a wonderful cabinet! I know how difficult it is to find a cabinet to fit a large TV. Lots of great stuff!

  12. Love your treasures!! You really have a talent for displaying them.
No legs is my vote. Anything that might make the cabinet unstable in the least since it will house a TV would be a concern... I think.
Good luck. Can't wait to see the finished project.

  13. Stopping by from White Wednesday.
Even though it collects dust, I like the leggy look. I have a cupboard similar and put it on big coasters. Your stuff is so great and you got an awesome deal, 5o bucks! Lezlee

  14. Gee, Susie - I think I'm the only one who votes for the legs!! lol! Even if you had to saw them off due to them being in bad shape, I'd put new ones on. I just think that furniture with legs showing give the piece more elegance and a less squaty appearance. I took an old wardrobe cabinet (check out my blog for the complete story!) and repurposed it into a TV armoire. Yeah, I have to use my Swiffer underneath it every week, but having legs on it 'opens' up the room even more and give the illusion of spaciousness. Just a thought....! :) Have fun and good luck with it!

  15. I'm with Laurie- it just looks finished with legs. But I'd hit lowes or somewhere and get some new ones..even porch post as legs would be cool. Love the price- how lucky of you.

  16. What a great find for $50!! I think it will make a great entertainment center. Personally, I like the look of it better with legs, but I hear ya about the dust. Love all your other treasures, too!
    Happy WW!

  17. I think legs or no legs depend on the look you are after and as you said the time saver on sweeping up dust. If legs were to stay then some of the fab reproduction legs would be a choice...if the cupboard will sit and the doors open ok then you've got a whole new look.

I'd love to find that cupboard at $50 for my big tv..I'll be watching to see how it looks with the TV in it. So are you leaving the glass in the doors? or covering with fabric? or maybe etching the glass with a design would be nice.

Really neat piece..as are your others.

I'm visiting for White Wednesday...my first one as a matter of fact..how did I miss this sweet get together for so long? I'm so glad I've found it now.

I'd love for you to visit with me.♥

    Happy Day,
    Stephanie ♥

  18. I love the cabinet but am not very good at visualizing projects-It sounds like you have received some excellent advice from people who know what they are talking about!

    Best wishes and good luck!

  19. As long as the cabinet already has a bottom so the door will not scrape the floor, off with the legs. I would do the same with the other cabinet too. Oh and I love your cabinets, you can never have too many to display all of your lovelies in.

  20. All of your cupboards are beautiful. What to do with everything you don't know what to do with?...Sell it and we will buy it! Just kidding, but then again not really. I would.
